Abstract:In this study, water-soluble chitosan with different molecular weights (WSC-3, WSC-10, WSC-20, WSC-30 and WSC-60) were prepared by acetic anhydride, which were used as restoration liquids to investigate their effects on the reinforcement and ageing resistance of paper documents. The results showed that compared with the paper before reinforcement treatment (original paper), the strength properties of the papers after reinforcement treatment with water-soluble chitosan of different molecular weights were enhanced, the whiteness was slightly decreased, the colour difference had a minimal change, and pH value and alkali storage capacity both increased. After accelerated aging, the strength properties of the reinforced treated papers showed a significantly smaller decrease compared to the original paper, retention rates of the tensile index, tear index, and zero-distance tensile strength of the WSC-30 reinforced treated paper increased by 9.7, 7.4, and 4.5 percent points, respectively, while the appearance and morphology, whiteness, and colour difference showed little variation.
