Abstract:Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin are the three main components in the cell walls of woody fiber biomass, which intricately interact to form supramolecular network structure through complex interactions, conferring lignocellulosic biomass exceptional mechanical properties and resistance to physical, chemical, and microbial degradation, and contributing to challenges in biomass pretreatment and component separation at the same time. In this paper, a comprehensive overview of recent academic reaserches in understanding the interactions among cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin was provided. In addition, covalent bonding, van der Waals force, and electrostatic interaction between lignin and hemicellulose were highlighted, in the hope of fully understanding and appreciating the cell wall structure at the atomic-molecular level, and providing little theoretical guidance for the genetic engineering of easily degradable wood fiber feedstocks and the exploration of clean and efficient biomass refining technologies. |
