Abstract:In this study, the effect of 2 molds (matched-die and plate-frame molds) on the pore structure of carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic (WL-CTP) prepared via wet forming process was investigated. The results showed that the molding time had no effect on the porosity when any mold was used, while the molding pressure affected the porosity. Pores were generated by insufficient deformation of the fiber network due to insufficient molding pressure when using the matched-die mold. In the case of plate-frame mold, pores were generated due to excessive extrusion of the molten preform. At a carbon fiber volume fraction of 50% and molding pressure of 5 MPa, the porosity (13%) of WL-CTP prepared by the matched-die mold was lower than that of its plate-frame molded counterpart (35%), therefore, the matched-die mold was more suitable for the preparation of WL-CTP with high fiber content. |
