Abstract:The differences between unpolarized and polarized light method for determination of cellulose fibre morphology were compared, the principle and characteristics of the methods were discussed. Certain materials, such as cellulose fibres, have a crystalline structure that results in the refractive index varying with the direction of polarization of the light. For polarized light method, a crossed-polarizers set-up is used to discriminate fibres and other materials like air bubbles, which do not rotate the plane of polarization. For unpolarized light method, a suitable unpolarized light source is used to create the high-contrast image between fibres and the background. |
