Abstract:Esterified starch (SE) was prepared by introducing aliphatic chains into the macromolecule of starch using caprylyl chloride as esterification reagent. SE and NaOH were used as interface modification agents for cassava dregs PBS composite. The FT-IR showed that the hydroxyl peaks of SE were weaker than that of the original starch, indicating that the hydrophobicity of SE was improved.Tensile and impact properties of the composites prepared by the cassava whole surface was treated with combination of SE and NaOH improved significantly comparing with that of the sample in which the cassava was treated only with SE or NaOH. Furthermore, the improved interfacial compatibility of the cassava dreg fibers treated with combination of SE and NaOH and the PBS matrix was confirmed by SEM observation. In addition, XRD analysis indicated that the crystallinity of composite in which cassava fibers were treated with NaOH was superior to that of the composite in which the cassava fiber was treated with combination of SE and NaOH. Furthermore, the mechanism of SE and NaOH surface treatment enhanced the interfacial bonding of composites was speculated.
