Abstract:The morphology of feather fiber was analyzed using scanning electron microscope, optical microscope and fiber morphology analyzer in this paper, and the influence of feather fibers mixed with wood pulp fibers on paper properties was investigated. The results indicated that the morphology of feather fibers from different parts of white chicken was different greatly, average length of feather barb was 15~20 mm and average width was 30~35 μm, average length of down-silk was 20~25 mm and average width was 20 μm. After separating with chemi-mechanical method, the feather fibers length was reduced similarly to hardwood fiber, the width was between softwood and hardwood fibers, and kink index was lower than wood fiber. The addition of feather fibers to paper sheets had a great influence on properties of paper sheets, breaking length, burst index and tear index decreased, but the bulky property increased with increasing addition amount of feather fibers. The Refining of feather fiber could not apparently improve physical properties of paper sheets, it was different from wood fibers.
