| Abstract:The possibility using fly ash as papermaking filler was investigated by using cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) as a retention aid. Considering low brightness of fly ash, various means including screening, floatation and mixing with calcium carbonate were tested to improve its brightness. The experimental results showed that the combination of the above three methods can markedly improve the brightness of the filler and handsheet. Using fly ash or the mixture of 50% fly ash and 50% calcium carbonate as filler can obviously increase handsheet opacity. However, handsheet brightness will decrease with increasing filler dosage. The strength properties of fly ash-filled handsheet are better than those of calcium carbonate-filled handsheet in a certain degree. |
