Abstract:Driven by global carbon neutrality goals and green industrial policies, biorefining has emerged as a critical pathway for the pulp and paper industry to achieve green upgrading and diversified, high-value development. This paper systematically elaborated on the technical routes and commercialization underlying three biorefinery strategies: “hemicellulose-first” “cellulose-first”, and “lignin-first”. Through a comparative analysis of representative domestic and international cases, including Shengquan Group, UPM Leuna, and Borregaard, the study discussed how biorefining empowers pulp and paper enterprises to construct a diversified “pulp-paper-chemicals-materials” manufacturing system. The research indicated that overcoming the cost paradox between bulk feedstock and fine products, ensuring the stability of the green premium market, and bridging advanced depolymerization technologies with existing industrial systems constitute the core industrialization challenges for the three strategies, respectively.
