| Abstract:To address the “white pollution” caused by residual agricultural plastic mulch films, the development of biodegradable and environmentally friendly alternative materials has become a crucial direction for sustainable agriculture. Paper mulch (also known as paper-based mulch film), primarily made from plant fibers, offers complete biodegradability, renewable raw materials, and designable functionality, making it a highly promising alternative. This paper systematically analyzed the performance differences between paper mulch and conventional plastic films, outlined their key performance indicators and evaluation methods, and reviewed recent research progress in areas such as fiber raw material development, strength enhancement, thermal insulation improvement, light-blocking capability enhancement, water resistance optimization, and degradation control. Based on existing challenges, future research directions and application prospects were discussed, aiming to provide a reference for the further development and industrial application of paper-based mulch films. |
