| Abstract:This study elucidated the effects of choline chloride/oxalic acid deep eutectic solvents (DES) system on the recycled fibers from eucalyptus chemical pulp, including chemical composition, morphological characteristics, ultrastructure and physical properties of the paper made from the recycled fibers. The results revealed that prolonged DES exposure progressively increased the content of cellulose and hemicellulose in recycled fibers (by 1.8%, and 4.7%, respectively), while the proportion of total lignin and ash decreased (by 21.9%, and 51.0%, respectively). This DES system preferentially targeted and dissolved amorphous cellulose and fines, which consequently increased the overall crystallinity index of the cellulosic matrix and promoted its recrystallization. This resulted in a slight increase in the wall thickness of fibers and a decrease in the content of fines, promoting the cocrystallization of cellulose. Therefore, the water retention value of the fibers decreased by 29.2%, indicating that the degree of hornification increased by 15.3%. This intensified fiber rigidity and brittleness, which in turn severely compromised inter-fiber bonding and resulted in a significant degradation in physical properties of the paper except its own strength. The tensile index, bursting index, and tear index decreased from 50.2 N·m/g, 5.21 kPa·m²/g, and 11.2 mN·m²/g to 14.3 N·m/g, 1.08 kPa·m²/g, and 5.05 mN·m²/g. |
