Abstract:Lignin exhibits excellent UV protection and antioxidant properties due to its aromatic structure and the presence of functional groups such as phenolic hydroxyl groups, carbonyl groups, carboxyl groups, and double bonds that have UV absorption capabilities. In recent years, lignin has gained widespread attention in sunscreen research as a promising alternative to the mineral or synthetic organic UV protectants currently used in sunscreen products. The absence of extended conjugated systems in lignin’s molecular structure limits its absorption primarily to UVB radiation, necessitating further research to overcome its poor UVA protection and enhance its overall efficacy as a UV shield. This review summarized the structure-property relationships of lignin in UV resistance performance, with a particular emphasis on strategies and research advances in enhancing its UVA protection. Furthermore, the potential applications and future prospects of lignin in sunscreen products were discussed, providing valuable insights for the development of lignin-based sunscreens.
