| Abstract:In this study, high-temperature steam was used to pretreat tobacco stems, and the effects of steam pretreatment time on the extraction efficiency of tobacco stems, water-soluble sugar content in the extract, microstructure, and smoke release characteristics of the produced reconstituted tobacco sheets were systematically investigated. The results showed that the steam pretreatment time significantly influenced the extraction rate of tobacco stems and the sugar content in the extract. Compared to untreated tobacco stems (with an extraction rate of 34.1%), the extraction rate increased by 21% after 8 min of steam pretreatment (with an extraction rate of 41.3%). Meanwhile, the increases in the content of water-soluble total sugars and reducing sugars in the extract both exceeded 69%. Microstructural analysis revealed that steam pretreatment caused the tissue structure of tobacco stems to expand and the pore sizes to increase. Smoke component analysis demonstrated that steam pretreatment effectively reduced the content of harmful components such as nicotine, formaldehyde, methanol, furfural, and chloromethane in the smoke of reconstituted tobacco sheets, and significantly increased the content of aromatic components such as acids, aldehydes, and phenols. |
