| Abstract:This study investigated and analyzed the chemical composition, anatomical structure, fiber morphology, and mechanical properties of six representative Urticaceae plants in China, namely Boehmeria nivea, Boehmeria longispica, Boehmeria penduliflora, Pouzolzia zeylanica, Urtica laetevirens, and Debregeasia orientalis. The results showed that significant differences existed in the chemical composition among these six Urticaceae species. The cellulose contents of Boehmeria nivea and Urtica laetevirens were both above 40%. The syringyl-to-guaiacyl (S/G) ratios of lignin in Boehmeria penduliflora and Urtica laetevirens were relatively low, whereas that of the other four species exceeded 1. In addition, all six Urticaceae materials exhibited distinct lumen structures and relatively high aspect ratios, with wall-to-lumen ratios ranging from 0.9 to 3.1. The crystallinity of all six Urticaceae fibers exceeded 80%, with microfibril angles distributing between 8° and 33°, and fiber densities ranging from 1.56 to 1.74 g/cm³. Handsheet produced from Urtica laetevirens fibers exhibited the highest zero-span tensile index, which reached 84.4 kN·m/g, while those made from the other five fibers ranged from 44.1 to 65.9 kN·m/g. |
