| Abstract:Lignin is a biopolymer composed of phenylpropane structural units that connected through ether and carbon-carbon bonds. The abundant oxygen-containing groups in lignin endow it with natural biological activities, such as promoting plant tissue division, enhancing plant photosynthesis, and improving plant stress resistance. Based on the recent advances in the application of lignin for plant growth regulation in agriculture and forestry, this paper reviewed the effects of molecular structure and physicochemical properties of lignin on plant growth and development. The endogenous and exogenous lignin regulating plant biomass, endogenous hormone, and gene expression were critically reviewed. Finally, the challenges and future directions of lignin in regulating plant growth and development were also discussed. |
