| Abstract:In this study, bromination alkyl substitution was achieved by reacting 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide with the hydroxyl groups of the bacterial cellulose (BC) molecular chain, thereby anchoring bromine active groups onto the BC framework. Subsequently, surface-initiated atom transfer free radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) was employed to graft diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) onto the BC surface, yielding quaternary ammonium bacterial cellulose (QBC). A systematic investigation was conducted to elucidate the structure, properties, and antibacterial mechanism of QBC. The result showed that extending the quaternization grafting reaction time resulted in the progressive grafting of DADMAC onto the BC chain, with the QBC24 sample obtained after 24 h. During this reaction, the surface roughness of QBC24 increased, the crystallinity index decreased significantly from 80.37% to 73.21%, and the surface Zeta potential shifted from -25.4 mV to 25.1 mV. The quaternary ammonium cations in QBC24 effectively disrupted bacterial cell structures, achieving antibacterial rates exceeding 99% against both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, thereby demonstrating excellent broad-spectrum antibacterial performance. |
