Abstract:This study analyzed the wall-to-lumen ratio in 216 fiber samples from four categories of Chinese plants—hardwood, softwoods, graminaceous species, and bast fibers—using cryo-sectioning and microstructural staining. Results demonstrated significantly lower ratios with minimal intra-sample variation in woody fibers: approximately 92% of hardwoods (47/51) exhibited ratios <1 (Lonicera ruprechtiana latewood peaked at 1.26), while Lonicera 86% of softwoods (12/14) presented <1 (Larix gmelimii latewood maximum: 1.09). Conversely, graminaceous and bast fibers showed higher ratios with greater variability: approximately 91% of graminaceous samples (30/33) exceeded 1 (Ferroca lamus strictus maximum: 4.25), and approximately 85% of bast fibers (100/118) were >1 (Litsea coreana var. lanuginose peak: 6.47).
