Abstract:The shell materials of cigarette microcapsules commonly come from biomass-based materials, such as gelatin, sodium alginate, chitosan, cellulose and other plant-based materials. Biomass-based materials offer several advantages such as eco-friendly, renewable, biodegradable, and exhibiting favorable film-forming properties. The preparation methods of biomass-based microcapsules mainly include physical methods, chemical methods, and physicochemical methods. Choosing the appropriate preparation method can improve the encapsulation efficiency of the core material and reduce losses. This paper summarized the shell and core materials of the biomass-based microcapsules in tobacco, demonstrated preparation methods, and explained the flavorings release mechanism. The application of biomass-based microcapsules in tobacco were further illustrated, and a summary and outlook were provided.
