| Abstract:The effects of mechanical refining of bamboo chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) by PFI refiner on fiber morphology, wet-end chemistry and paper properties were discussed. The results showed that the mechanical refining decreased the mean length-weighted of fiber, increased the content of fines and its retention, increased the dissolved charge of pulp, but decreased the drainability, Zeta potential and acid groups content of pulp. Meanwhile, the tensile index, bursting index and initial wet tensile index of the paper were improved due to the refining treatment. When the beating degree of pulp increased from 15 °SR to 40 °SR, the mean length-weighted of fiber was decreased from 0.788 mm to 0.459 mm, the content of fines was increased from 6.30% to 7.30%, the retention rate of fines was increased from 93.5% to 96.0%, the dissolved charge of the pulp was increased from 1.325 μeq/g to 2.010 μeq/g. However, the Zeta potential decreased from an absolute value of 75.4 mV to 53.2 mV, decreased by 29.4%. The tensile index of the paper was increased from 6.55 N·m/g to 9.81 N·m/g, and the initial wet tensile index was increased from 0.271 N·m/g to 0.290 N·m/g, with relative increases of 49.8% and 7.0%, respectively. |
