Abstract:The rapid expansion of China’s chemical mechanical pulp production capacity has filled the gap of recycled fiber resulting from the implementation of the “waste restriction order”. Water environmental capacity is a renewable natural resource that restricts the development of papermaking industry. The development of papermaking industry requires water environmental capacity to mitigate the potential environmental impacts of wastewater discharge. This paper reviewed the contribution of wastewater treatment in reducing pollutant discharge. The water environmental capacity limitations faced by the improvement of domestic pulp production capacity were mentioned to propose that reducing water consumption per unit product was a necessary way to continuously minimize the environmental impact of papermainy industry. Besides, the necessity of establishing guidelines for water recycling in the paper industry was advocated, while the feasible technologies for clean production and water recycling were summarized. In order to provide a reference for promoting the sustainable development of papermaking industry.
