Abstract:Paper cultural relics, including ancient books, calligraphy and painting, archives, etc., were attracted attention from the academic community due to their rich historical value and difficult preservation characteristics. In order to comprehensively and macroscopically understand the latest international research progress and development trend of paper cultural relics, this article comprehensively analyzed the development trend of the global paper cultural relics research field from the perspectives of basic research and technological research and development based on the Web of Science database and the Derwent Innovations Index database through bibliometric methods. The analysis results showed that global research on paper cultural relics had developed rapidly since 2015, and China was in an absolute leading position in this research field. In terms of basic research, research hotspots focued on four themes: research on paper protection of paper cultural relics, aging and degradation mechanisms of paper cultural relics, the revelation and protection of the content of paper cultural relics, and non-destructive identification technology for paper cultural relics. In terms of technological research and development, the main research topics included paper processing and storage, application of artificial intelligence and deep learning technologies, exhibition and preservation of paper cultural relics, as well as information retrieval and digital management.Comprehensive analysis showed that paper protection had always been a core issue in the research of paper cultural relics. The application and development of advanced materials science, digital technology, spectroscopy, and imaging technology will promote the research of paper cultural relics protection towards a new stage of modernization and digitization.
