Abstract:In order to further investigate the structure and design of core material for central heated tobacco, six kinds of central heated tobacco core materials of Marlboro IQOS brand were selected to analyze the microstructure, physicochemical properties, and inorganic element content of samples. The results showed that core material was composed of a mixed slurry system stacked under certain pressure, with lower average fiber length and width, but higher fine fiber content, percentage of fine fiber area, and fiber coarseness, The cutting width of the core material was 0.5 mm, and the filling density reached 0.615 g/cm3. The content of hot water soluble substances in core material ranged from 61.51% to 67.99%, with an average value of 63.69%. The organic chemical composition of core material was relatively low except for total alkaloids, and the high content of total alkaloids was artificially added. The average ash content of the core material was 9.98%, and inorganic element analysis indicated that it may contain combustion regulators and heat transfer materials containing metal salts such as magnesium and aluminum. Glycerol and propylene glycol were the main smoke generating agents for core material, with an average total amount of 13.79%. The sensory quality of the core material was relatively more dependent on artificially added volatile aroma compounds.
