Abstract:The possibility of calcined clay instead of titanium dioxide, which was used on the coated kraft paper was investigated in this paper. The basic properties of calcined clay, especially the coverage were analyzed. The effects of calcined kaolin type and dosage on the properties of coated kraft paper were discussed in the application of mid-coating for coated kraft paper. The results showed that high oil absorption calcined clay provided excellent opacity to the coating, with paper opacity level of over 90%. The coated kraft paper with added high oil absorption calcined clay could reach whiteness of more than 87%, gloss of 52.2%~54.1%, printing gloss of 82%~86%, and ink absorption of 17%~20%. Compared to coated kraft paper with higher dosage of titanium dioxide, there was no significant difference in the indicators. Combined performance indicators, the appropriate dosage of calcined clay was 47 parts, which could significantly reduce the production cost of coated kraft paper.
