Abstract:The silane coupling agent γ-glycidyl ether propyl trimethoxysilane (KH560) was used to graft-modify polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with different polymerization degrees and alcoholysis degrees, respectively. The physicochemical properties of PVA modified by KH560 and their enhancement effect on the physical properties of paper after surface sizing were discussed. The results showed that owing to the high activity of silanol groups, the Si—O—C bonds were linked with hydroxyl groups of paper fiber by dehydration and condensation, which were synergistic reacted with hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl groups and formed three-dimensional cross-linked network in KH560-PVA1799, so that it showed excellent surface sizing performance. The paper after surface sizing had folding endurance of 232 times, stiffness of 71.7 mN, tear index of 14.9 mN∙m2/g, contact angle of 63° and sizing degree of 26 s. Compared with the paper sizing with unmodified PVA, they were increased by 112.8%, 39.0%, 90.2%, 23.5% and 136.3%,respectively. |
