Abstract:Mixed/composite fillers of titanium dioxide and kaolin, talc, grounel calcium carbonate (GCC) and wollastonite were added to the decorative base paper by mixing or mechanical grinding methods. The effects of the fillers on paper properties were discussed and the results showed titanium dioxide/talc composite filler was better by mechanical grinding of talc coated with titanium dioxide. In order to meet the coating conditions of titanium dioxide, talc was pre-ground. The optimum pre-grinding conditions of talc was determined by single factor method. The optimum conditions were determined as grinding concentration 50%, grinding time 120 min, and medium ratio 1∶8.5. Under this condition, the particle size of the titanium dioxide/talc composite filler was about 1 μm. The preparation process of the composite filler was optimized by an orthogonal experiment, and the opacity and whiteness of decorative base paper were 98.6% and 86.7%, respectively, when composite grinding time was 50 min, grinding concentration was 50%, medium ratio was 1∶10 and compound ratio of talc and titanium dioxide was 5∶5. In addition, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analyses showed that a new chemical bond, Ti—O—Si bond, was formed between titanium dioxide and talc.
