Abstract:Lignin is a bio-based material with functional groups such as phenolic hydroxyl, alcohol hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxyl groups. An in-depth understanding of the properties and structure of lignin will facilitate the high-value and high-quality exploitation of lignin. Considering the versatile properties of lignin in the production of value-added products (e.g., lignin is of antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, biocompatatible and non-toxic properties), this study mainly reviewed the potential applications of lignin-based functional composite materials in areas of antibacterial carriers, biodegradation, drug delivery, UV resistance and tissue engineering,etc. as well as the great role of lignin nanoparticles and carbon materials in biomedicine.
