Abstract:The consumption of potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is an important safety indicator for food contact paper/cardboard materials and products, demonstrating the content of substances that can be oxidized by KMnO4 during the migration from food contact material to soaking solution. In this study the back titration method was used to test the KMnO4 consumption in paper straws and various factors influencing the KMnO4 consumption in paper straws were discussed. The results showed that the KMnO4 consumption of paper with high ratio of bleached chemical thermal mechanical pulp was greater than that of its low-ratio counterpart. Paper with external sizing consumed more KMnO4 than that without sizing, the higher sizing agent content, the greater KMnO4 consumption. The KMnO4 consumption of paper straws increased as the number of layers and soaked area/volume ratio (S/V) increased. It was further showed that the paper straws base paper contained harmless reducing substances and their hydrolysates may migrate into the soaking solution and cause increased KMnO4 consumption, which required further study.
