Abstract:In this study, maleic anhydride and chitosan were used as coupling agent and modifier, respectively, to modify PCC so as to improve its dispersibility and usability as paper fillers. The characterizations of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and contact angle indicated that the modification of chitosan towards PCC was successful and the modified PCC had good dispersibility, small average particle size, and high Zeta potential. Compared with unmodified PCC, chitosan-maleic anhydride modified PCC possessed increased retention rate (76.8%) when the dosage was 5%, and improved the physical strength (bursting strength, tearing strength, and tensile index increased by 9%, 11%, and 5%, respectively) when the dosage was 10%, opacity, and whiteness of paper sheets. |
