Abstract:Nanocellulose has attracted much attention due to its high strength, light weight, renewable and biodegradable properties. The application of nanocellulose and its products can help address long-standing problems regarding resources, environment, health, and safety. Nanocellulose mainly includes cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) and cellulose nanofibril (CNF). This paper reviewed the latest progress of nanocellulose preparation and drying as well as compared the advantages/disadvantages regarding the above-mentioned aspects. The existing or potential industrialized production methods, e.g., organic acid/solid acid hydrolysis, new solvent (DES), and American high value-added pulping method (AVAP) for CNC preparation, Enzymatic hydrolysis, organic acid, DES pretreatment, and spray drying for CNF preparation were mainly introduced. The current status quo of commercial production and application for nanocellulose were introduced and further R&D needs were identified as well, in order to provide references for the green, scale preparation and commercial utilization of nanocellulose. |
