Preparation of Fragrance Microcapsules by In-situ Polymerization and Its Application in Fragrance Paper

Abstract:In this study, the fragrance microcapsules were prepared by in-situ polymerization with melamine formaldehyde resin (MF) as the wall material, lemon flavor oil as the core material, and styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer (SMA) as the emulsifier, and fragrance paper was made by adding fragrance microcapsules to pulp. The effects of pH value and SMA dosage on the synthesis process of fragrance microcapsules were studied. The results showed that the dispersion of the microcapsules was in a good state when the pH value was 5 and the SMA dosage was 2%. The fragrance microcapsules were characterized by optical microscope, field emission electron scanning microscope (FESEM), laser particle size distribution analyzer, and Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The results showed that the microcapsules were spherical and had a core-shell structure, with an average particle size of 13.75 μm. Through the performance test of the fragrance paper, the results showed that the fragrance paper had a long fragrance retention time below 70℃. When the content of the fragrance microcapsules increased from 3% to 9%, the fragrance retention time increased from 12.0 h to 17.0 h. In addition, the addition of fragrance microcapsules increased the whiteness of the fragrance paper, but reduced the tensile strength of the fragrance paper. When the content of fragrance microcapsules increased from 0 to 9%, the whiteness of the fragrance paper increased from 82.0% to 83.6%, while the tensile strength decreases from 2.75 kN/m to 1.75 kN/m.
