Abstract:The effects of different alkali treatments on microstructure and the subsequent mechanical pulp properties of reed stem were studied. The results showed that the appearance and internal structure of reed stem were changed in varying degrees by alkali impregnation under different alkali dosage and temperature. The damage degree of the micro-surface and internal structure of the reed stem increased with the increase of alkali dosage and impregnation temperature, which was closely related to the mechanical pulping performance of the subsequent process. When the dosage of NaOH was 6% and the temperature was 120℃ with time of 90 min, the micro-structure of reed stem changed greatly. The keratinized layer covered of waxy layer and silicified layer covering the surface was seriously damaged, and the material filled in vascular bundle disappeared which created the channels for alkali liquor. At that time, the mechanical pulp of reed had the best performance.
