Abstract:In this paper, a composite paper was prepared through filling chitosan into porous structure of paper by an impregnation process and its optical and mechanical properties as well as water resistance were investigated . The results indicated that all composite papers preparing with the papers from the pulps of eucalyptus, reed, fir and jute and chitosan exhibited excellent optical and mechanical properties. Among these composite papers, chitosan/eucalyptus fiber composite paper (70 g/m2 in basis weight, containing 60% chitosan) had the optimum properties, which showed a transparency of 88%, an optical haze of 88%, a tensile strength of 75.0 MPa, a toughness of 7.68 MJ/m3, and an average folding endurance of over 5000 times. Meanwhile, it showed a good water resistance, approximately 38.1% of its wet tensile strength was retained after saturated water absorption reached 43.9%, with a merely 12.5% increasing in its thickness.
