Abstract:Styrene acrylic emulsion was modified with itaconic acid (IA) and applied in flame retardant air filter paper to enhance the strength performance. The results showed that the modified styrene acrylic emulsion (MSA) had an average particle diameter of 0.0868 μm, 34.7% lower than that before modification, and exhibited good performance in mechanical stability, dilution stability and solid content. The air filter paper impregnated with styrene acrylic emulsion modified with 2% IA (based on the mass of total monomers) achieved the optimum stiffness and bursting strength of 3.4 mN•m and 290 kPa respectively, which were respectively 27.8% and 18.4% higher than that of the samples impregreated with unmodified styrene acrylic. However, its permeability decreased 2.27%. The air filter paper impregnated with both MSA and flame retardant at mass ratio of 1∶1.4, its stiffness, bursting strength, and limited oxygen index reached: 4.07 mN·m,301 kPa, 30.9% respectively, which could meet the properties standard of flame retardant air filter paper. |
