Abstract:Cellulase treatment of pulp fibers was applied to improve the softness of handsheets and the corresponding mechanism was also exproled in this study. It was found that cellulase treatment could increase the flexibility index of single pulp fiber and then improve the softness of handsheets. SEM observation and water retention value results also showed that cellulase treatment can improve the surface fibrillation and hydrophilicity of pulp fibers. In addition, the softness of handsheets made of softwood, hardwood and the mixed pulps could be improved by 35.5, 18.0 and 25.2 units, respectively, when cellulase dosage was 10 EGU/g. Meanwhile, the water retention value of softwood pulp and hardwood pulp were increased by 3.8% and 5.0%, respectively compared with the control when 10 EGU/g of cellulase was added. However, the tensile strength of tissue handsheets increased first then decreased slightly along with the cellulase treatment compared to the control. |
