Abstract:The structure and performance of two kinds of para-aramid pulp were compared. One was obtained by jet-spun process (pulp 1), the other was fibrillated by mechanical force (pulp 2). In this paper, specific surface area, water retention value (WRV) and property of dynamic drainage of the para-aramid pulps were studied. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that pulp 1 had a flexible sheet structure while pulp 2 contained fibrillated nano-fiber. The specific surface area of pulp 1 was 26.365 m2/g and pulp 2 was 15.157 m2/g. The dynamic drainage curve indicated that pulp 1’s drainage rate was lower than pulp 2 so that pulp 1 was more difficult to drain water off. The tensile index of paper-based composite made from pulp 1 was 42.3 N·m/g that was higher than pulp 2; And the tensile index of paper-based composite of fiber and pulp 1 was 34.0 N·m/g, which was also higher than that made from fiber and pulp 2.
