Abstract:Precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) was modified via in-situ surface encapsulation with barium sulfate produced by the reaction of sodium sulfate and barium chlorite at 25℃and 90℃. The dissolution behavior, retention and drainage property of PCC and barium sulfate-coated PCC, as well as the strength and optical properties of the filled handsheets were investigated. The experimental results showed that the surface of PCC was coated by barium sulfate. After the barium sulfate-coating modification, the dissolution of the filler in distilled water decreased. The beating degree of the stock filled with the modified PCC was higher them flled with PCC. The retention rate of modified PCC was the highest when it was modified at 90℃ and the charge of barium sulfate was 50%(on PCC).The tensile index of the handsheets filled with the modified PCC increased by 6.63%, the brightness, opacity and the light scattering coefficient of the handsheets were also improved. |
