Abstract:Series of cationic acrylate/silica hybrid latexes were prepared by semi-continuous seed emulsion polymerization, using styrene, butyl acrylate, (2-(methacryloyloxy) ethyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride and acrylamide as monomers. The optimal condition of semi-continuous emulsion polymerization of a pre-emulsion was pH value of 2.25 in the presence of 0.5% initiator AIBA, on the mixture of St and BA, and 2% silica was added along with the hydrophilic monomers. The Cobb value of the paper sized by latex with 2% dropped 71% compared with the paper sized by pure poly-acrylate emulsionand the ring crush index of the paper sized by latex with 2% silica increased by 41%. Though the water resistance of the paper sized by the latex with 8% silica was not as good as the latex with 2% silica, the contact angle increased to 120°. |
