Abstract:Comparing with commercial precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC) the characteristics of shell powder and the effect of its application as filler in various dosages on paper strength and optical properties were studied, and the feasibility of using shell powder as papermaking filler and its advantages were discussed. The results showed that shell powder exhibited spindle-shaped scalenohedral and gathered together in clusters, the average particle size was 0.44 μm and the particle size distribution was uniform, the brightness was 91.4%, the sediment volume was 5.35 mL/g. It was feasible to use shell powder as papermaking filler. Physical tests of shell powder-filled paper indicated that, when the same content was filled, the strength properties and optical properties of the shell powder-filled paper were similar to that of PCC-filled paper, while the opacity and light scattering coefficient were higher than that of PCC-filled paper. Shell powder could be used as a novel papermaking filler. When the filler content was 10%, the tensile index, tear index, burst index and brightness of shell powder-filled paper were 0.09 N·m/g, 0.05 mN·m2/g, 0.03 kPa·m2/g and 0.57% respectively and lower than PCC-filled paper, while the opacity and light scattering coefficient were 2.62 point and 3.84 m2/g higher respectively compared with the PCC-filled paper. |
