| Abstract:In this paper the retention properties, the influence on white water and the mechanical properties of the paper were compared when attapulgite and calcium carbonate were employed as paper filler, and the mechanism of the filling process was discussed. Results showed that, attapulgite fibers could be closely integrated with pulp fibers through hydrogen bonding force under sufficient hydrated treatment, and this binding mode was significantly different from the calcium carbonate. Attapulgite was a high retention paper filler which ash retention was generally above 80%, it could significantly improve the paper ash content and turbidity of the white water. Attapulgite could not deteriorate the mechanical properties of the paper. As a filler it was significantly superior than the calcium carbonate particularly under high filling content. |
