Abstract:The effect of application of four typical strength additives melamine formaldehyde resin (MF), polyamide epichlorohydrin (PAE), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) in carbon paper with two ways of internal sizing and surface sizing on the properties of carbon paper including physical strength, air permeability and the conductivity was investigated. Meanwhile the effect of pressing on the performance of the handsheet was compared. The results showed that the strength additives could increase the physical strength of carbon paper while resulting in the reduction of conductivity and permeability. The the promotion of tensile index was most obvious, but the reductions of air permeability and the conductivity were also biggest when MF was used internally. Surface sizing of CPAM had the most significant effect on tensile index of carbon paper, its maximum was almost double of that by using other additives, suggesting that the effective retention of CPAM could further increase the strength of carbon paper. Pressing could increase the carbon paper tensile index obviously, the increase of tensile index was amplified under the low dosage of strength additive, and the maximum of tensile index was reached in advanced. The influence of strength additive on carbon paper resistance was weakened. |
