Abstract:A novel block copolymer of acrylamide and dillyldimethyl ammonium chloride (P (AM-b-DADMAC)) was prepared by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and its structural characteristics were analyzed by FT-IR, 1H-NMR and SEC measurements. Turbidimetry and focused beam reflectance measurement (FBRM) were used to investigate its behavior in agglomerating dissolved and colloidal substances (DCS) from the unbleached thermomechanical pulp. The results indicated that P(AM-b-DADMAC) block copolymer with controlled polydispersity index (PDI) and composition could be successfully synthesized in aqueous solution by using RAFT method. The block copolymer was proved to be more effective in the treatment of dissolved substances (DS) and colloidal substances (CS) compared to the PDADMAC homopolymer, due to its unique physical and chemical properties.
