Abstract:The effect of using blended attapulgite clay, calcium carbonate, talc and wollastonite as filler on the paper strength property was studied. The results showed that the paper strength property improved significantly when using blended filler instead of using single filler, practically the blended filled of attapulgite clay and calcium carbonate improved the strength property evidently. Tensile index of the paper adding 10% blended filler in which the ratio of attapulgite clay and calcium carbonate was 1∶2 was 65.6% higher than that of using calcium carbonate only, and 56.9% higher than that of only using attapulgite clay. Particle analysis and SEM observation indicated that the compact effect of blended fillers with different particle size and morphological features was one of reasons of strength property improvement; another reason was ascribe to the high length/diameter ratio and easy hydration of attapulgite clay.
