Abstract:Cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) emulsion with high solid content, low viscosity, good stability and rapid dissolution was prepared from acrylamide (AM) and quaternary ammonium cationic monomer by dispersion polymerization in an aqueous solution of ammonium sulfate. Different dispersing agents, cationic monomers and initiators for polymerization reaction were studied, and many methods to reduce the apparent viscosity were tried. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and laser particle size analyzer were used to analyse the properties of the emulsion. The results showed that, the emulsion had the superior properties when poly (methacryloyloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDMC), methacryloyloxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC) and 2,2′-azobis (2-methylpropionamide) dihydrochloride (V50) were used as dispersing agent, cationic monomer and initiator, respectively, and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) was used to reduce the apparent viscosity. The product CPAM was applied in fine paper production as retention and drainage aids. The application parameters such as dosage of CPAM, retention time and mixing rate were optimized. The filler retention was improved from 23.4% to 73.7% and beating degree was reduced from 39°SR to 25°SR under optimum condition. |
