Abstract:Compared with metal-and rubber-based friction materials paper-based friction material is a novel friction material which is widely used in oil-immersed clutches in automatic transmissions of automibiles or even engineering machines. In this paper, we investigated the wear mechanisms of the paper-based friction material by analyzing its worn surface and thermal decay. Results showed that the fibres (especially the plant fibres) were abraded seriously when friction material was subjected to repeated shear and compression. Fibres debonded from resin due to weak interfacial strength. The fractions of fibres and abrasive filler were entrapped in the soft fibres and micro pores, which would not promote the abrasion. In addition, the friction material also occurred thermal decay, mainly due to the degradation of the plant fibres. These observations indicated that the main wear mechanisms are adhesion wear and fatigue wear. |
