Abstract:A starch-based fixing agent ─ low molecular weight and high cationic substitute degree starch (LHCS) was used to pretreat a bleached chemithermomechanical pulp (BCTMP). The changes of the adsorption amounts and adsorption efficiencies of various wet-end additives onto the BCTMP fibers were investigated using UV-visible spectroscopy. The additives included a fluorescence whitening agent (FWA), a methyl violet (MV), a polyaminopolyamine epichlorhydrin (PAE) wet strengthening agent, a cationic starch dry strengthening agent (DSA-CS), an alkyl ketene dimmer (AKD) sizing agent and a cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) retention agent. The results showed that the adsorption amounts and the adsorption efficiencies of the above chemicals can be improved to different degrees by the LHCS pretreatment, and the improved adsorptions can improve their corresponding functions. In summary, the LHCS is an efficient agent in improving the efficiency of wet-end chemicals in papermaking with high-yield pulps. |
