Abstract:In this study improvement of the properties of alkaline peroxide mechanical pulp (APMP) by using cinnamoylated xylans (CX) with different degrees of substitution (DS) were investigated. The results showed that the physical strength properties of APMP were significangtly improved by using CX as additive. The optimal DS of CX was 0.18, and the optimal application conditions of adding CX were 15 min of mixing time and 1.0% of CX dosage, in which the physical strength properties and papermaking performance of APMP were optimal. Compared with the control APMP without additive, the breaking length, burst index, tear index, and brightness of the added APMP increased by 37.4%, 90.5%, 19.0% and 3.7% respectively. When blending KP and APMP to prepare the furnish, adding CX could obtain the similar strength of the paper by reducing the proportion of KP or increasing the proportion of APMP. The analysis of SEM and FT-IR spectra indicated that CX was adsorbed on the surface of the pulp fibers, which decreased the porosity between the fibers and improved the uniformity of paper surface.
