Abstract:Aliphatic chains were introduced into the macromolecule of soda lignin using aliphatic acyl chlorides as esterification reagents. The data of contact angle showed that the hydrophobicity of esterified lignin (EL) was enhanced as compared to the original lignin. EL was further used as interfacial modifier in poly (butylene succinate) (PBS)-chemi-thermo mechnical pulp (CTMP) fiber composites. As a result, the composites with enhanced mechanical properties were obtained, the tensile, impact and bending strengths were increased by 25.1%, 22.4% and 19.3%, respectively compared with those of the specimen without any treatment when 2% EL (on fiber) (synthesized by palmitoyl chloride, n(—COCl)∶n(—OH)=3∶2) was used. Furthermore, the improved interfacial bonding between treated fibers and matrix was verified by SEM images. The shear viscosity of composite was increased due to the addition of EL at the beginning of processing procedure, but in general, the rheological behaviors of composites were not significantly changed.
