Abstract:Different kinds of chemicals, including amphoteric polyacrylamide (AmPAM), cationic starch (CS), and cationic microfibrillated cellulose (CMFC), were used in this paper to improve the inter-fiber bonding capacity and physical strength properties of poplar P-RC APMP with few sacrifice of its high bulk. The results showed that the traditional chemicals (positive AmPAM and CS) had the best strength improvement for HYP handsheets, but the bulk decreased dramatically. The new kinds of chemicals, which included CMFC, neutral AmPAM, and LHCS cationic starch with low relative molecular weight and high sufortution degree, had the positive effect on the strength properties and bulk. Furthermore, the addition modes of chemicals were modified to enhance the bonding properties of HYP-containing pulps, that was the chemicals were first added into the HYP, then the HYP was mixed with chemical pulp. The results showed that there were similar trends of strength improvement for two kinds of conditions (the HYP-containing pulps and HYP only). The CMFC, LHCS and PAE could improve the tensile strength properties of HYP-containing papers in different degrees with maintaining less decrement of bulk.
