Abstract:The swelling treatment of cotton fiber by using NaOH-urea system was described. The effects of reaction temperature, concentration and dosage of the NaOH-urea system on the swelling property of cotton fiber was preliminarily discussed, the structure characterization and morphological analysis of the fiber before and after the treatment were respectively conducted through the infrared spectrum analysis and optical microscopy observation. Research results showed that the NaOH-urea system could improve the swelling property of cotton fiber obviously, the maximum WRV of treated cotton fiber increased by 186.91% compared with untreated cotton fiber; the molecular structure of treated fiber didn’t change significantly; however, fiber surface was locally dissolved, its fibrillation degree and surface roughness were both improved.
