Abstract:The possibility of electricity generation in the ferricyanide-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) with CTMP wastewater as substrate and the effect of CODCr concentration on MFC performance were investigated. The results showed that the electricity generation increased with increasing CODCr concentration, the maximal power density of 233 mW/m2 was obtained and CODCr removal efficiency reached 62.4%. When the CODCr concentration increased to over 5200 mg/L, the microbial activity was inhibited by high CODCr concentration, the maximal power density and CODCr removal efficiency decreased to 34.2 mW/m2 and 32.8% respectively. CTMP wastewater can be used as substrate in MFC for electricity generation while it is degraded, which offers a novel method for the treatment and recycle of papermaking wastewater.
