Abstract:The effects of mechanical refining of bamboo chemithermomechanical pulp (CTMP) by PFI refiner on fiber morphology, wet-end chemistry and paper properties were discussed. The results showed that the mechanical refining decreased the average length of fiber, increased the content of fines and its retention, increased the dissolved charge of pulp, but decreased the drainability, Zeta potential and acid groups content of pulp. Meanwhile, the tensile strength, bursting strength and initial wet tensile strength of the paper were improved due to the refining treatment. When the beating degree of pulp increased from 15 °SR to 40 °SR, the average fiber length decreased by 0.13 mm, the content of fines and its retention increased by 1.0% and 2.5%, respectively, the dissolved charge of pulp increased by 0.685 μeq·g-1, but the Zeta potential decreased by -22.2 mV. The tensile index and initial wet tensile strength were increased by 3.268 N·m·g-1 and 1.498 N·m-1, respectively.
